The Making of NONOS
Die Geschwister Welte fertigen dreidimensionale, anmutig weibliche Skulpturen aus Stahl, Bronze, Carbon, Epoxidharzen sowie lichtechten Pigmenten. Franziska und Mercedes Welte gelten mittlerweile als Spezialistinnen für figurale, weibliche Skulpturen, für die sie den Terminus NONOS aus der Taufe gehoben haben.
Seit 2005 arbeiten die Schwestern gemeinsam an ihrem Œuvre.
In der Anfangsphase realisierten sie figurative Miniaturen aus Draht.
Mit der Zeit wurden Format und Größe der Arbeiten fruchtbringend gesteigert.
NONOS, das sind Skulpturen mit ausgeprägt weiblich definierter Silhouette, die als eine Art allegorisches Sinnbild der Lebensfreude agieren. Sie stellen eine kongeniale Verschmelzung zwischen Kunst in ihrer Eigenart und den weiblichen Urprinzipien dar:
Herzensliebe, Weisheit sowie Schönheit und Achtsamkeit gepaart mit schöpferischer Kraft sind in diesen Werken verankert.
Thematik, Hintergründe und Ikonographie
In der Formensprache und in der Farbgebung manifestieren sich autobiographische Lebenserfahrungen und Sichtweisen der Künstlerinnen. Woher die Bezeichnung NONOS kommt und welche Bewandtnis es damit auf sich hat, ist ein streng gehütetes Geheimnis.
Seit dem Jahr 2005 ist die Bezeichnung NONOS urheberrechtlich geschützt.
Als Vorlagen dienen die Urprinzipien des Weiblichen. Grundaufgabe ist es demnach, dieses schöpferische Potential zu veranschaulichen. Die NONOS treten in ihrer ästhetischen Formensprache, voll klarer innerer Kraft, selbstbewusst in Erscheinung. Sie vermitteln aber auch zarte Poesie, Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit.
NONOS stehen für Sinnes- sowie Lebensfreude und verweisen auch auf den kosmologischen Kreislauf des Werdens, Seins und Vergehens.
Es ist die große Freiheit in der Rezeption, die diese Arbeiten für den Betrachter so spannend macht und ihn zu einer aktiven Kunstwahrnehmung auffordert.
Zwischen den Künstlerinnen und ihren NONOS besteht eine enge Verbundenheit.
Das Refugium, Schloss Wellenstein am Bodensee, bietet glücklicherweise genug Raum für eine symbiotische Lebensgemeinschaft.
NONOISMUS:
Steht jetzt und in Zukunft für ein zartgliedriges und doch kraftvoll verwobenes Ensemble von Farbe, Form und Bewegung. Die NONOS vermitteln Weiblichkeit gepaart mit sinnlicher Freude und ungebremster lebensbejahender Kreativität. Sie liefern jedoch auch eine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen nach Selbst- und Fremdbestimmung oder Gegenwart und Zukunft.
Künstlerische Einordnung
Die vollplastisch allansichtig ausgeführten Skulpturen changieren zwischen unterlebensgroß hin zu überlebensgroßen Werken hin zu raumgreifenden Installationen.
Sie beginnen zu oszillieren und versetzen ihre Umgebung in energetische Schwingungen.
Die Arbeiten für den Park „Giardini della Marinaressa“ in Venedig beeindrucken durch ihr monumentales Erscheinungsbild. Die gotisch anmutenden, gelängten Skulpturen bewahren trotz der Größe ihre grazile, ästhetisch ausgewogene Formensprache. Sie vermitteln eine entmaterialisierte Schwerelosigkeit.
Die Künstlerinnen Franziska und Mercedes Welte realisieren in ihren Skulpturen
anatomische Perfektion mit raumgreifender Dynamik, die unmittelbar mit dem Rezipienten in Interaktion tritt. Es ist dieses oszillierende Raumgefühl gepaart mit dem glatten, raffiniert in Erscheinung tretenden Kolorit der Oberflächengestaltung, das dem Betrachter eine alle Sinne ansprechende Kunsterfahrung ermöglicht. Je nach gewählter Betrachterposition ergeben sich, bedingt durch den unterschiedlichen Lichteinfall, geheimnisvolle Widerspiegelungen und Verschattungen.
Die grazile, schwebende Formensprache der Skulpturen bringt für den Betrachter eine transzendente Wahrnehmungserfahrung mit sich.
Rezeptionsästhetik als eine sinnliche Wahrnehmung von Kunst ermöglicht deren Fortführung und letztlich liegt die Vollendung des offenen Kunstwerkes im Auge des Betrachters.
Rezeption und Ikonographie
„Das Glatte ist im Social-Media-Zeitalter die Signatur der Gegenwart“. Die Ästhetik des Glatten führt zu einer Art Nobilitierung des Gewohnten.
Die Empfindung ist eine Paarung des Blickes mit dem Gesehenen. Manchmal erfordert es ein Hindurchblicken durch das Sichtbare, um das Verdeckte aufzuspüren.
Die NONOS fusionieren das polierte Schönheitsideal mit der Sensibilität, Vulnerabilität und Gebrochenheit, dem das Schöne seine Verführungskraft und Erotik verdankt.
Die Poesie des Schönen geht einher mit Lust und Lebensfreude.
Fazit
Franziska und Mercedes Welte finden immer neue Ausdrucksformen. Neben Malerei, Objekt, Plastik entwerfen sie Möbel und andere Design-Objekte.
Die NONOS finden große Anerkennung und sind auf Internationalen Kunstmessen und Ausstellungen zu sehen.
Die Installation der Markgräfin Agnes wurde vom Stift Klosterneuburg angekauft und wird seit Mai 2019 ganzjährig im Leopoldsaal ausgestellt.
Im Rahmen der Biennale Venedig 2019 haben die Künstlerinnen ihre Skulpturen im
Giardini della Marinaressa und im Palazzo Mora ausgestellt.
Auch 2020 wird eine spannende Ausstellung im Museum Stift Klosterneuburg realisiert.
Unter dem Titel „was leid tut“ stellen die Künstlerinnen ihre tiefbewegenden Foto Arbeiten (Leichentücher) aus.

The Making of NONOS
The Welte sisters work besides paintings, objects and photography on three-dimensional, gracefully feminine sculptures out of bronze, carbon, epoxy resin and pigments.
By now, Franziska and Mercedes Welte are well established as specialists for figural, female sculptures, which they launched under the term NONOS.
The sisters have been collaborating on their oeuvre since 2005.
The beginning phase saw them implementing figurative miniatures made of steel.
Over time, the format and the size of the artworks were increased, bringing their potentiality to the forefront.
NONOS: sculptures with distinctive, well-defined feminine silhouettes that act as a sort of allegorical symbol of joie de vivre. They represent a congenial fusion of art, with all its idiosyncrasies, and the archetypal principles of femininity:
pure love, wisdom, beauty and mindfulness coupled with creative power - all these are anchored in the sisters’ artworks.
Themes, backgrounds and iconography
The stylistic elements and the choice of colour tell of the autobiographic life experiences and perspectives of the artists. As to the origin of the term NONOS and the meaning behind it - now that is a closely guarded secret.
The designation “NONOS” is protected by copyright since 2005.
The figures are modelled on the archetypal principles of femininity. Accordingly, the main task is to exemplify this creative potential. In her work “The Making of Rubens” (1995), Svetlana Alpers discusses Rubens’ creativity as an original female characteristic. With their aesthetic language of form, full of clear inner strength, the NONOS make a confident and assertive appearance. At the same time, they also transmit a sense of delicate poetry, freedom and independence.
NONOS represent sensory pleasure and a love of life, and also make reference to the cosmological cycle of becoming, being and passing away.
It is the great freedom in the reception of the works that makes them so fascinating for the observer, inviting him or her to actively participate in the perception of the art.
A strong bond connects the artists and their NONOS.
NONOISM
NONOISM: now and in the future, this concept stands for a delicate and yet powerfully intertwined ensemble of colour, shape and movement. The NONOS convey femininity combined with sensual joy and uninhibited, life-affirming creativity. However, they also present an artistic confrontation with questions about self-determination and heteronomy or present and future.
Artistic categorisation
The fully plastic sculptures, which are structured on all sides, shimmer between smaller-than-life and larger-than-life works all the way to expansive installations encompassing an entire room. They begin to oscillate, filling their surroundings with energetic vibrations.
The new artworks for the park “Giardini della Marinaressa” in Venice stun visitors with their monumental appearance. Despite their size, the Gothically influenced, elongated sculptures manage to keep their graceful, aesthetically balanced language of design. They convey a dematerialised weightlessness. A kind of spiritualisation that creates a link between the earthly and the cosmic sphere.
With their sculptures, the artists Franziska and Mercedes Welte execute
anatomic perfection with expansive dynamics that enter into direct interaction with the recipient. It is this oscillating sense of spaciousness, together with the smooth, refined hue of the surface design, that allows the observer to experience the art in a manner that appeals to all the senses. Depending on the position chosen by the observer, the varying angles at which the light falls give way to mysterious reflections and shadow play.
The graceful, floating design language of the sculptures takes the observer along on a transcendent perceptive experience.
The aesthetics of reception as a sensory perception of art allows the continuation thereof, and ultimately, the completion of the open work of art lies in the eye of the beholder.
Reception and iconography
“In the social media age, the Smooth is the calling card of the present”. The aesthetics of smoothness lead to a kind of ennoblement of the familiar.
Perception is a union of the gaze with that which is being viewed. Sometimes it requires looking through the visible in order to discover what is hidden.
The NONOS fuse this polished ideal of beauty with the sensitivity, vulnerability and brokenness that give beauty its power of seduction and eroticism.
The poetry of beauty goes hand in hand with lust and joy for life.
Bottom line
Franziska and Mercedes Welte are constantly coming up with new forms of expression. Alongside painting, relief and sculpture, they also design furniture and other design objects.
The NONOS have gained broad recognition and can be seen at international art fairs and exhibitions.
The installation of the Margravine Agnes has been acquired by the Klosterneuburg Monastery and will be on display once more from May 2019.
As part of the Biennale Venice 2019, the NONOS sculptures were displayed in the Giardini della Marinaressa and the Palazzo Mora.
